What to Look For in the Forest

Throughout the trails you will see purple markers. These markers help guide you to the many features that make up an old forest.

Nursery There are many areas in the forest where windblown trees have fallen but this particular area is an example of growth decades on. These logs act as nurseries for lichen, insects and other animal life while the opening to sunlight created by the fall has allowed young trees a chance to develop.

Burls Burls are bumpy places along the trunk of a tree and show where the tree developed scar tissue in response to stress. The stress might have been attacks by insects, damage from a nearby tree fall or an infection by a mold or virus.
